Blufflands State Trail: Harmony-Preston Valley Segment
Minnesota
The Harmony-Preston Valley segment of the Blufflands State Trail winds through some of southeastern Minnesota’s most striking scenery — a landscape of towering limestone bluffs, spring-fed streams, and deeply carved river valleys that feels worlds apart from the prairie flatlands to the west.
This 18-mile paved trail follows the South Branch of the Root River between the towns of Harmony and Preston, passing through the heart of Minnesota’s Driftless Area — a region the glaciers skipped, leaving behind rugged terrain more reminiscent of the Appalachian foothills than the Upper Midwest. The trail descends through Camp Creek Valley, where sheer bluff faces rise hundreds of feet on either side and cold-water trout streams cut through wooded ravines below.
Cycling is the main draw here, and the smooth asphalt surface makes it accessible for riders of all levels despite the terrain’s drama. Hikers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers share the corridor in their respective seasons. Birdwatchers should watch for bald eagles soaring along the bluff edges, particularly in late fall and winter.
Preston serves as a natural basecamp, with outfitters offering bike rentals and shuttle services. Harmony, at the trail’s southern end, is home to Minnesota’s largest Amish community — worth a visit for fresh-baked goods and handcrafted furniture.
Late September through mid-October is peak season, when the hardwood bluffs ignite in color and the summer crowds thin out. Spring brings wildflower displays and waterfalls running at full force after snowmelt. Either shoulder season rewards the visit.
