John Bryan State Park sits along the Little Miami River in Greene County, Ohio, where dramatic limestone gorges and Silurian-era dolomite cliffs make it one of the most geologically striking parks in the state. Spanning 752 acres, the park protects a rare stretch of cliff-lined river valley that feels worlds away from the surrounding farmland.

The gorge is the main attraction. Hiking trails follow the rim and descend to the river, winding past exposed rock faces layered with fossils and draped in ferns. The Pittsburgh-Cincinnati stagecoach route once crossed through here, and you can still trace sections of old pathways cut into the stone. In spring, wildflowers carpet the forest floor—trillium, bloodroot, and Virginia bluebells appear in succession along the shaded slopes.

Rock climbing and rappelling draw a dedicated following to the dolomite walls, making John Bryan one of the few Ohio state parks where technical climbing is permitted. The Little Miami River itself offers solid kayaking and fishing, particularly for smallmouth bass.

The park connects directly to Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, extending your hiking options considerably. Together, the two areas form one of the best short trail systems in southwestern Ohio.

Camping availability has not been confirmed for the current season—check with Ohio DNR before planning an overnight stay.

Visit in late April through May for peak wildflowers and comfortable gorge hiking, or in October when the canopy above the cliffs turns vivid with fall color.
