Buck Creek State Park

Tucked into the rolling farmland of Clark County, Buck Creek State Park centers on the 2,120-acre C.J. Brown Reservoir, making it one of western Ohio’s best destinations for water-based recreation. The park’s 4,016 acres offer a satisfying mix of lake life, trails, and open space that rewards day-trippers and weekend campers alike.

The reservoir is the main draw. Boaters, kayakers, and sailors take advantage of the generous open water, while anglers target saugeye, largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish from both boat and shore. A swimming beach with a bathhouse provides a low-key spot for families during the summer months.

On land, hikers and mountain bikers share a network of trails that wind through meadows and wooded ridgelines above the lake. The Lakeview Trail delivers exactly what its name promises — elevated views across the water that look especially striking during fall color season. Birders should bring binoculars; the reservoir’s edges attract migrating waterfowl and shorebirds in spring and fall.

The campground offers electric sites suited to both tents and RVs, with modern shower facilities and a camp store nearby. Sites closer to the water tend to fill first on summer weekends, so booking ahead is worth the effort.

The best time to visit is late May through early October for swimming and boating, though autumn brings cooler crowds and some of the park’s most scenic days. Spring migration season (March–April) is a quieter but rewarding window for wildlife watchers.
