Big Darby Plains Scenic Byway

Ohio

76.0 miles

Wind through one of Ohio’s most treasured natural corridors along the Big Darby Plains Scenic Byway, a 76-mile journey across the gentle farmlands and prairie remnants of central Ohio. Designated as both a State and National Scenic Byway, this route follows the path of Big Darby Creek, one of the most biologically diverse streams in the Midwest, home to over 100 species of fish and 40 species of mussels.

Rolling fields of corn and soybeans stretch to the horizon, punctuated by wildflower-dotted prairies, historic covered bridges, and charming small towns. Stop in Plain City or West Jefferson to browse local shops and grab a meal. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting herons, hawks, and migrating warblers along the creek corridors. Pull over at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park for hiking trails that wind through tallgrass prairie and ancient burial mounds.

The byway is stunning year-round, but late spring through early fall offers the richest experience, when prairies burst with color and the creek runs clear and inviting. Allow two to three hours for a leisurely drive with stops. This is rural Ohio at its most quietly beautiful — unhurried, unspoiled, and unforgettable.
