Gilgo State Park
New York (Long Island County)
Gilgo State Park stretches across 1,223 acres of barrier beach along Long Island’s southern shore, offering one of the most unspoiled coastal landscapes in the New York metropolitan region. Established in 1928, this park preserves a rare ribbon of dunes, maritime grasslands, and tidal wetlands that feel worlds away from the city just 50 miles to the west.
The park’s real draw is its beach — a wide, sandy Atlantic frontage that never gets as packed as neighboring Jones Beach. Surfcasting is excellent here, with striped bass and bluefish running strong from late spring through fall. The surrounding dune habitat supports nesting shorebirds, making it a worthwhile stop for birders scanning for piping plovers and least terns during breeding season.
Beyond the beach, the bay side opens up opportunities for kayaking and canoeing through the sheltered waters of Great South Bay. Hiking the sandy trails through the dune grass offers quiet solitude, especially on weekday mornings. Fishing from the shore or a small boat remains one of the most popular activities year-round.
Camping availability is not currently confirmed — check with New York State Parks before planning an overnight trip. Day-use facilities include parking areas and basic amenities, though this park leans more rugged than manicured.
The best time to visit is late May through September for swimming and beach days, though fall brings fewer crowds and prime fishing conditions. Come prepared with sunscreen, water, and wind layers — the barrier beach offers little shade and the ocean breeze can be brisk.
