Hempstead Lake State Park
Tucked into the heart of Long Island’s Nassau County, Hempstead Lake State Park offers 784 acres of unexpected wilderness just 30 miles from Manhattan. Established in 1928, this park centers around its namesake lake — the largest body of freshwater in Nassau County — along with several smaller ponds and waterways that once served as part of Brooklyn’s water supply system.
Birdwatchers flock here for good reason. The park sits along the Atlantic Flyway, making it one of the best spots on Long Island to observe migrating warblers, herons, and egrets. A recently restored boardwalk loops through the wetlands surrounding McDonald Pond, offering elevated views over marshland teeming with wildlife.
Beyond birding, the park delivers a full roster of outdoor activities. Paved paths wind through wooded areas ideal for cycling and jogging, while the lake itself draws anglers targeting largemouth bass and sunfish. In winter, the trails stay open for cross-country skiing when conditions allow. Families will find well-maintained playgrounds, picnic areas with grills, and open fields for pickup games.
Spring and fall deliver the most rewarding visits — mild temperatures, active wildlife, and thinner crowds than the summer rush. Summer weekends can fill up quickly, so arriving early is worth the effort.
As a day-use park, Hempstead Lake does not offer on-site camping. For overnight options, nearby state parks along the South Shore provide campground access within a short drive.
