Caleb Smith State Park Preserve
New York (Long Island County)
Tucked along the Nissequogue River on Long Island, Caleb Smith State Park Preserve offers 545 acres of protected woodland, freshwater wetlands, and meandering streams that feel worlds away from the suburban sprawl surrounding it. Established in 1963, this preserve safeguards one of Long Island’s most ecologically significant landscapes — a place where osprey nest above tidal creeks and white-tailed deer move quietly through stands of oak and maple.
The park’s trail system winds through diverse habitats, from upland hardwood forests to cattail marshes fed by natural springs. Hiking and nature walks are the primary draws, with well-maintained paths suitable for all skill levels. Birdwatchers will find the preserve particularly rewarding — over 140 species have been documented here, making it one of the best birding spots on Long Island. Fishing is available along the Nissequogue River and Willow Pond, where anglers cast for largemouth bass and sunfish. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over in winter months.
The on-site nature museum and interpretive programs make this an excellent destination for families looking to introduce kids to Long Island’s natural heritage. Guided walks led by park naturalists run throughout the year.
Camping is not available at Caleb Smith, so plan this as a day trip. The preserve is open year-round, though spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions and the richest wildlife activity. Note that as a designated preserve, pets and bicycles are not permitted — the focus here is on quiet enjoyment and conservation.
