Driftwood Beach State Recreation Site
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Driftwood Beach State Recreation Site sits along Oregon’s central coast, where the Pacific has sculpted one of the most photographed shorelines in the state. The beach takes its name from the massive tangles of sun-bleached logs and root systems that wash ashore and settle into striking formations along the sand — natural sculptures that draw photographers, artists, and curious wanderers year-round.
The recreation site offers easy beach access with a short trail from the parking area down to the shore. Once there, visitors can explore the driftwood formations, beachcomb for agates and shells, fly kites in the reliable coastal winds, or simply walk the wide stretch of sand. Tidepooling is rewarding at lower tides, with sea stars, anemones, and small crabs tucked into the rocky areas nearby. Birdwatchers will spot shorebirds, gulls, and the occasional bald eagle scanning the surf.
There is no camping directly at Driftwood Beach, but several state parks and campgrounds along the central coast sit within a short drive, making it an easy day stop on a longer coastal trip.
The best time to visit is late summer through early fall, when fog burns off by midday and temperatures are mild. That said, winter storms deliver the most dramatic driftwood deposits and powerful wave-watching — just dress for sideways rain and bring layers. Sunrise and sunset light the bleached wood in warm golds that make every photo worth the early alarm.
