Yachats State Recreation Area
Oregon (Central Coast County)
Yachats State Recreation Area sits along one of the most dramatic stretches of the Oregon Coast, where basalt rock formations meet the crashing Pacific surf. Located in the small village of Yachats — often called “the gem of the Oregon Coast” — this recreation area offers visitors direct access to rugged tidepools, wave-carved rock shelves, and sweeping ocean views that feel worlds away from the more crowded beaches to the north.
The real draw here is the coastline itself. At low tide, the rocky intertidal zone comes alive with sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs tucked into shallow pools. Visitors can walk along the 804 Trail, a paved oceanfront path that connects through town and follows the old highway route, making it accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Storm watching from the bluffs is exceptional during winter months, when massive waves explode against the basalt shelves in walls of white spray.
The area serves as a day-use site — there are no campgrounds within the recreation area itself, though nearby Beachside State Recreation Site and Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park both offer full camping facilities within a short drive. Picnic areas and restrooms are available on-site.
The best time to visit depends on what you’re after. Summer brings milder weather and the lowest tides for tidepooling. Winter delivers raw coastal drama and far fewer crowds. Spring wildflowers along the bluffs are a quiet highlight that most visitors miss entirely.
Bring layers. The Oregon Coast earns its reputation.
