Seal Rock State Recreation Site sits along Oregon’s Central Coast, where rugged basalt formations jut from the surf and tidepools teem with life. The site’s namesake rock draws harbor seals and sea lions that haul out on its craggy surface — bring binoculars and you’ll spot them year-round.

A short trail descends from the parking area to the beach, where volcanic rock shelves create some of the coast’s most accessible tidepools. At low tide, expect to find sea stars, anemones, hermit crabs, and purple urchins clustered in shallow pools. The intertidal zone here is remarkably rich, making it a favorite stop for families and marine biology enthusiasts alike.

Beyond tidepooling, the beach invites beachcombing, photography, and whale watching during the gray whale migration (late December through January, and again in March). Surfers occasionally work the breaks near the rock formations, though the area is better known for contemplation than competition. Picnic tables with ocean views sit above the beach — ideal for a coast lunch between Lincoln City and Florence.

Seal Rock is a day-use site with no camping on-site. For overnight stays, Beachside State Recreation Site is just two miles south and offers tent and RV spots steps from the sand.

Summer brings the driest weather and warmest temperatures, but winter storm watching is spectacular here. The exposed rock formations amplify the drama of heavy surf. Dress in layers any time of year — the Oregon coast earns its reputation for sideways rain.
