Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve

Tucked into the southwestern corner of Staten Island, Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve is one of New York City’s most unexpected natural treasures. Established in 1977 and spanning 265 acres, this preserve protects a rare mosaic of habitats — sandy barrens, freshwater wetlands, spring-fed streams, and the historic clay pits that once supplied brick-making operations in the 19th century.
