Built in 1856 on Staten Island’s south shore, New Dorp Light guided ships through the Swash Channel into New York’s Lower Bay for over a century. The modest rear range light worked in tandem with the West Bank Light to help vessels navigate the busy harbor. Decommissioned and no longer active, the lighthouse now sits on private residential property and is not open to the public. Visitors cannot climb the tower, but it can be viewed and photographed from the surrounding streets — golden hour on clear evenings offers the best light. Nearby, explore Great Kills Park, the Staten Island Greenbelt trail system, and Historic Richmond Town, one of New York City’s oldest preserved villages.
