Edison Memorial Tower
New Jersey (Edison County)
Edison Memorial Tower
Rising 131 feet above the Middlesex County landscape, the Edison Memorial Tower marks the exact spot where Thomas Edison changed the world. It was here at his Menlo Park laboratory that Edison perfected the incandescent light bulb in 1879, invented the phonograph, and developed dozens of other innovations that shaped modern life. The striking Art Deco tower, completed in 1937, is topped with a 14-foot replica of an incandescent bulb that glows amber at night — a fitting beacon for one of America’s most important invention sites.
The surrounding park and museum grounds at the Thomas Edison Center offer a contemplative walk through innovation history. Inside, exhibits display original artifacts from Edison’s workshop, including early phonographs and light bulb prototypes. Interpretive panels trace the timeline of Edison’s “invention factory” years, when this quiet New Jersey hilltop was the Silicon Valley of its era. The grounds are compact but meaningful, with historical markers and the original milestone markers from Edison’s era still in place.
Visitors should plan for about an hour to explore the tower, museum, and grounds. Spring and fall bring comfortable weather and thinner crowds, though the illuminated tower is especially striking on clear winter evenings. Admission to the grounds is free. The site is easily accessible from the Garden State Parkway and pairs well with a day trip exploring central New Jersey’s surprisingly rich historical corridor. Check seasonal hours before visiting, as museum access can be limited on weekdays.
