Stretching across 863 acres along both banks of the Charles River, the Charles River Reservation is one of Greater Boston’s most beloved urban parklands. Spanning Suffolk and Middlesex counties, this state park transforms the river corridor into a continuous ribbon of green space connecting Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, and several neighboring communities.

The Esplanade and its iconic Hatch Shell anchor the Boston side, where summer concerts draw thousands to the riverbank. Across the water, the Cambridge side offers quieter stretches of pathway shaded by mature trees. The Dr. Paul Dudley White Bike Path runs approximately 17 miles along both banks, making it one of New England’s premier routes for cycling, jogging, and inline skating. Community sailing programs on the Charles give visitors affordable access to the water, while kayakers and rowers share the river throughout the warmer months.

Beyond the paths, you’ll find playgrounds, sport courts, seasonal wading pools, and dedicated areas for picnicking. The Artesani Playground in Brighton and Magazine Beach in Cambridge are popular gathering spots for families. Birdwatchers will appreciate the surprising diversity of waterfowl and migratory species that use the river as a flyway.

Spring through fall delivers the best experience, with peak color along the riverbanks in mid-October drawing photographers from across the region. Winter visitors still enjoy the paths for cold-weather running and cross-country skiing after storms.

No camping facilities are available within the reservation. The Charles River Reservation is a day-use park, perfect for a morning run, an afternoon paddle, or an evening concert under the stars.
