Hemlock Gorge Reservation packs a surprising amount of natural drama into just 16 acres along the Charles River in Middlesex County. This state park centers on a narrow, rocky gorge where the river drops through a series of cascades, framed by towering eastern hemlock trees that give the reservation its name. The star attraction is Echo Bridge, a massive granite arch built in 1877 to carry the Sudbury Aqueduct — stand beneath it and speak into the curved underside to hear your voice bounce back with an eerie, cathedral-like reverb.

The trail network is compact but rewarding. A loop of roughly one mile winds along both sides of the gorge, crossing the river and threading through dense hemlock groves that stay green year-round. The terrain is uneven and rocky in places, so sturdy footwear helps. Birdwatchers will find warblers and herons along the riverbank, and the gorge itself draws photographers chasing the interplay of water, stone, and dappled light.
