The Lower Neponset River Trail follows one of Massachusetts’ most historically significant waterways through the heart of Suffolk County, tracing a path where tidal marshes meet urban neighborhoods in a surprisingly wild corridor. This greenway connects Dorchester’s Pope John Paul II Park to Central Avenue in Milton, offering walkers, joggers, and cyclists a paved route alongside the Neponset River estuary — one of the last salt marshes within Boston city limits.

What makes this trail special is the contrast. One moment you’re passing through restored wetlands where great blue herons fish in the shallows; the next, you’re rolling past the remnants of old industrial mills that once powered the region’s economy. Interpretive signs along the route tell the story of the Neponset’s transformation from a heavily polluted industrial river to a recovering urban ecosystem — a story still unfolding.

Birdwatching is exceptional here, particularly during spring and fall migration when the salt marsh attracts shorebirds, osprey, and the occasional snowy egret. The flat, paved surface makes the trail accessible for families with strollers and wheelchair users alike. Kayakers can launch near the Neponset River Reservation to paddle the tidal stretches.

Spring through fall offers the best conditions, with wildflowers lining the banks from May through August. Summer evenings bring a steady breeze off the water that takes the edge off the heat. Winter walks are quieter but rewarding — the bare trees open up views across the marsh you won’t get in leafier months.
