Mystic River Reservation

Stretching across 359 acres of Middlesex County, Mystic River Reservation follows the winding course of the Mystic River through some of Greater Boston’s most accessible urban greenspace. The reservation’s paved paths along the riverbanks are a favorite for joggers, cyclists, and dog walkers year-round. Kayakers and canoeists can launch from several access points to paddle the slow-moving river, spotting great blue herons and painted turtles along the way. Birdwatchers will find the marshland sections particularly rewarding during spring and fall migrations, when warblers and shorebirds pass through in impressive numbers. There are no camping facilities at Mystic River Reservation, which is consistent with its urban park character — this is a day-use destination best enjoyed in shorter visits.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the canopy fills in along the riverbanks and the water is warm enough for paddling. Autumn brings striking foliage reflected in the river’s surface. Even winter has its appeal, with quiet trails and crisp views through bare branches.
