Pope John Paul II Park Reservation

Tucked along the Neponset River in Suffolk County, Pope John Paul II Park Reservation offers 66 acres of green space where Boston’s urban edge meets tidal estuary. Named in honor of the pope who celebrated Mass on the Boston Common in 1979, this state park sits on a former landfill transformed into one of the city’s most striking reclamation success stories.

The park’s paved multi-use trail follows the river’s curve, drawing joggers, cyclists, and families out for a stroll with views of the Neponset marshes. Birdwatchers will find plenty to spot along the estuary — great blue herons, osprey, and migrating shorebirds frequent the tidal flats, especially during spring and fall migration windows. Open meadows and gentle hills make it a favorite for kite flying, picnicking, and pickup games of soccer or frisbee.

A highlight is the park’s connection to the Neponset River Greenway, a paved trail network linking several parks and neighborhoods between Dorchester and Milton. You can walk or bike for miles along the river without crossing a road. Kayakers and canoeists can launch from nearby access points to explore the tidal estuary up close.

There are no camping facilities at the reservation. Restrooms and parking are available on-site.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the meadows are green and the marshes are alive with wildlife. Winter visits are quieter but rewarding for birding. Admission is free year-round.
