Cape Cod Rail Trail follows the path of the old Penn Central Railroad corridor through the heart of Cape Cod, stretching roughly 25 miles from Dennis to Wellfleet. It’s one of New England’s most beloved paved trails — flat, well-maintained, and threaded through a landscape that shifts from pitch pine forests to cranberry bogs to salt marsh views that open up without warning.
The trail passes through six Cape Cod towns: Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, and Wellfleet. Each has its own character and access points with parking, so you can ride the full length or pick a shorter section. The Nickerson State Park connector in Brewster is a popular detour, adding wooded trails and freshwater kettle ponds for swimming. In Orleans, the trail runs close to Nauset Beach, making a bike-to-beach day entirely doable.
Cycling is the main draw, but walkers, joggers, and inline skaters share the path. Bike rental shops cluster near the Dennis and Brewster trailheads — no need to haul your own. The surface is smooth asphalt for most of the route, accessible for strollers and wheelchairs on many stretches.
Late spring through early fall is prime season. Summer brings crowds but also the best beach weather. September and early October offer cooler rides, thinner traffic, and cranberry harvest season in the surrounding bogs.
There are no campgrounds directly on the trail, but Nickerson State Park nearby offers over 400 campsites and serves as a natural basecamp.
