Billingsgate Island Light stands as a haunting reminder of Cape Cod’s shifting geography. Built in 1858 off Wellfleet, Massachusetts, this lighthouse once served a thriving fishing community on Billingsgate Island. However, relentless erosion claimed the island, and the light was deactivated as the land disappeared beneath the waves.

Today, the lighthouse foundation is only visible at low tide, making it one of New England’s most unique “ghost lighthouses.” The site is not open to the public and cannot be climbed.
