Ames Nowell State Park
Tucked into Plymouth County in southeastern Massachusetts, Ames Nowell State Park offers 612 acres of rolling woodland, kettle ponds, and glacial terrain that feels miles removed from the suburbs surrounding it. The park’s centerpiece is Cleveland Pond, a scenic kettle pond that draws anglers for warm-water fishing and serves as a peaceful backdrop for picnicking families.
A network of trails — roughly 10 miles worth — winds through mixed hardwood and pine forests, crossing footbridges over streams and skirting wetland edges. The terrain is gentle enough for casual hikers and families with young children, but varied enough to keep regular visitors interested. Mountain biking is popular on the wider paths, and horseback riding is permitted on designated trails. In winter, the flat-to-rolling landscape is well-suited for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Birdwatchers will find the wetland areas particularly rewarding, with great blue herons, wood ducks, and warblers frequenting the pond margins and forest understory. The park also supports a healthy population of white-tailed deer, red foxes, and eastern box turtles.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit — spring brings wildflowers and migratory birds, while autumn transforms the hardwood canopy into a showcase of New England color. Summer weekends can draw crowds to the pond area, so early mornings are your best bet for a quieter experience.
Note that camping is not available at Ames Nowell. The park is a day-use destination, open dawn to dusk year-round, with no entrance fee.
