Quincy Quarries Reservation

Tucked into 22 acres of Norfolk County, Quincy Quarries Reservation is one of Massachusetts’ most unexpected outdoor destinations. Once the source of granite that built landmarks like the Bunker Hill Monument, these abandoned quarries have been transformed into a striking landscape of sheer rock faces, flooded pits of deep blue-green water, and walls alive with vibrant street art.

The reservation’s main draw is rock climbing. The quarry walls offer routes for climbers of all levels, from beginner-friendly slabs to challenging overhangs, making it one of the best urban climbing spots in New England. Bring your own gear — there are no rental facilities on-site. Beyond climbing, the paved Quarry Hills Riverwalk trail winds through the site and connects to the larger Blue Hills Reservation trail system, offering easy walks with dramatic views of the old quarry cuts.

Note that swimming and diving in the quarries is strictly prohibited — the flooded pits are dangerously deep with submerged hazards. Camping is not available at this reservation, but nearby Blue Hills Reservation and Wompatuck State Park offer options if you’re planning an overnight trip.

Spring through fall is the best window for visiting. The quarry walls catch afternoon sun beautifully, and the graffiti-covered granite makes for excellent photography any time of year. Winter visits are possible but climbing conditions become icy and unsafe.

Expect a raw, industrial-meets-nature atmosphere — this is not a manicured park, and that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
