Dorchester Shores Reservation stretches across 44 acres of Boston’s southeastern coastline in Suffolk County, offering one of the city’s most accessible escapes to the waterfront. This state park connects a string of beaches and green spaces along Dorchester Bay, giving visitors sweeping views of the Boston Harbor Islands and the open Atlantic beyond.
The reservation links several distinct areas — including Malibu Beach, Savin Hill Beach, and Carson Beach — through a paved multi-use path that runs along the shore. Walkers, joggers, and cyclists share this corridor, making it one of the best car-free routes in Greater Boston. On warm days, the beaches draw swimmers and sunbathers, while the grassy lawns between them fill with picnickers and pickup sports games. Fishing from the rocky points is popular year-round, and birdwatchers will find shorebirds and migratory species along the tidal flats.
There are no camping facilities at Dorchester Shores Reservation. This is a day-use park, easily reached by the MBTA Red Line, with Savin Hill and JFK/UMass stations both within walking distance — a rarity for coastal green space anywhere in New England.
The best time to visit is late May through September, when the beaches are staffed with lifeguards and the harbor breezes keep temperatures comfortable. Fall brings quieter paths and dramatic skies over the water. Even in winter, the shoreline walk rewards bundled-up visitors with stark, beautiful views of the harbor and city skyline that most tourists never see.
