Standing in the Delaware Bay off the New Jersey coast, Ship John Shoal Light has guided mariners since 1877. Named after the ship *John*, which wrecked on this treacherous shoal, the lighthouse is one of the finest examples of a Victorian Second Empire–style caisson light, with its distinctive mansard roof and iron superstructure rising from a cast-iron foundation planted directly in the bay.

The light remains active and is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. It is not open to the public, so visitors cannot climb the tower.
