Stow Creek State Park
New Jersey (Bridgeton County)
Tucked along the tidal marshes of Cumberland County, Stow Creek State Park preserves 1,091 acres of some of New Jersey’s most pristine coastal wetland habitat. This quiet, uncrowded park sits where Stow Creek meets the Delaware Bay, offering a landscape that feels worlds apart from the Garden State’s busier destinations.
What makes Stow Creek special is its wild, untouched character. The park protects expansive salt marshes, hardwood forests, and tidal creek corridors that serve as critical habitat for migratory birds, bald eagles, and ospreys. Birders consider this stretch of the Delaware Bayshore one of the most rewarding in the mid-Atlantic, particularly during spring shorebird migration when horseshoe crabs draw massive flocks to nearby beaches.
Kayaking and canoeing are the premier activities here. Paddling Stow Creek’s calm tidal waters gives you access to marsh channels where herons wade and terrapins sun themselves on muddy banks. Fishing is productive year-round, with catches including catfish, largemouth bass, and white perch. Hiking trails wind through upland forests where white-tailed deer are a common sight.
Camping availability is not confirmed, so check with the New Jersey Division of Parks before planning an overnight stay. Nearby options in the Bayshore region can fill the gap.
The best time to visit is late April through June, when migratory bird activity peaks and the marshes are lush and alive. Fall brings quieter trails and excellent fishing conditions. Come prepared for mosquitoes in summer months, and bring binoculars — you will use them.
