Molokini Light

Established in 1989, Molokini Light marks the crescent-shaped volcanic crater of Molokini, situated roughly three miles off Maui’s southwest coast. The automated light aids navigation for vessels transiting the Alalakeiki Channel and approaching the islet’s shallow reef. As an active U.S. Coast Guard aid to navigation, the light is not open to public access—Molokini itself is a protected Marine Life Conservation District and State Seabird Sanctuary, restricting land access entirely.

Photographers get the best results during early morning boat charters when low-angle light illuminates the crater walls. Nearby attractions include world-class snorkeling within the crater’s sheltered basin, seasonal humpback whale watching (December–April), and the beaches of Wailea and Makena on the Maui shore.
