Kaena Point Light stands at the remote northwestern tip of Oahu, Hawaii, marking one of the most rugged and untouched coastal areas in the state. Built in 1990, this modern automated light replaced earlier navigation aids that guided vessels around the dangerous point. The tower is not open to the public, but the surrounding Kaena Point Natural Area Reserve offers spectacular hiking along a coastal trail popular with photographers, especially during golden hour and winter months when massive waves crash against the shore. The area is a protected habitat for Hawaiian monk seals, Laysan albatross, and native plants. Nearby attractions include the Waianae Coast beaches and the legendary significance of Kaena Point as a “leaping place of souls” in Hawaiian mythology.
