Horton Point Light
Long Island Sound · New York
Perched on a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound in Southold, New York, Horton Point Light has guided mariners since 1857. George Washington himself recommended this location for a lighthouse in 1790, though construction didn’t begin for nearly seven decades. The square granite tower rises above the keeper’s dwelling, which now houses the Southold Historical Society’s nautical museum.
While the tower is not open to public climbing, the surrounding Horton Point Lighthouse Park offers sweeping Sound views and beach access via a steep staircase. Golden hour provides the best photography, with warm light striking the white tower against the water. Nearby, explore Southold’s wineries, farm stands, and the charming village center.
