Hallock State Park Preserve
New York (Long Island County)
Hallock State Park Preserve sits on 225 acres along Long Island’s North Shore, where rolling farmland meets the Long Island Sound. Established in 2006, this relatively young addition to New York’s state park system protects one of the last undeveloped stretches of coastline in Suffolk County — a rarity on increasingly built-up Long Island.
The preserve centers on a half-mile sandy beach with views across the Sound to Connecticut. Behind the shoreline, trails wind through coastal woodlands, open meadows, and former agricultural fields that are slowly returning to native habitat. Birders will find the preserve particularly rewarding during spring and fall migration, when warblers, raptors, and shorebirds pass through in impressive numbers. The bluffs above the beach offer one of the best vantage points on the North Shore for watching ospreys and harriers hunt.
Hiking trails total roughly three miles and are mostly flat, making them accessible for families with young children. Fishing is popular along the beach, with striped bass and bluefish running seasonally. The preserve also supports environmental education programs throughout the year.
Camping is not currently available at Hallock, but nearby Wildwood State Park offers developed campsites just a short drive east along the Sound.
Visit between late May and early October for beach access and the fullest trail experience. Fall brings spectacular foliage against the Sound’s blue backdrop with far fewer crowds. Arrive early on summer weekends — the small parking area fills quickly, and the park closes once capacity is reached.
