Grays Reef Light

Grays Reef Light

Lake Michigan · Michigan

Grays Reef Light stands in northern Lake Michigan off Bliss Township, Emmet County, marking the dangerous Grays Reef passage since 1891. This active aid to navigation features a distinctive art deco–style concrete tower rising from a massive crib foundation, replacing an earlier lightship station. The light warns vessels of the treacherous shoals between the Beaver Island archipelago and the mainland. The lighthouse is not open to the public and can only be viewed by boat. Golden hour provides the best photography, with the tower silhouetted against dramatic Lake Michigan sunsets. Nearby, visitors can explore Mackinaw City, the Straits of Mackinac, Colonial Michilimackinac, and ferry services to Mackinac Island and Beaver Island.
