Standing on the northern end of Beaver Island, Michigan, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners through Lake Michigan’s waters since 1856. The tower remains an active navigational aid operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. While the lighthouse is not open to the public and visitors cannot climb the tower, its striking exterior and waterfront setting make it a favorite photography subject — golden hour on summer evenings offers the best light against the lake backdrop.
Beaver Island itself is worth the ferry ride from Charlevoix, with rich history tied to a 19th-century Mormon kingdom, pristine beaches, and excellent kayaking. The island’s small-town charm, nature trails, and dark-sky stargazing round out a memorable northern Michigan getaway.
