Standing at the entrance to Delaware Bay near Lewes, Delaware, this historic lighthouse was built in 1838 to guide vessels along the Delaware Breakwater. It served as a range front light, helping mariners navigate one of the East Coast’s most important harbors of refuge. The light was eventually deactivated and is no longer an active aid to navigation.
The lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be climbed, but it remains a compelling subject for photographers — golden hour and early morning offer the best light against the bay backdrop. Nearby, visitors can explore Cape Henlopen State Park, the Lewes Historical Society, and the charming shops and restaurants of downtown Lewes.
