River Road – Kentucky

Winding along the banks of the Kentucky River for 7 miles, River Road offers one of the Bluegrass State’s most intimate scenic drives. This state-designated scenic byway threads through a landscape where towering limestone palisades rise dramatically above the water, draped in hardwood forest that erupts in color each autumn.

The route passes through rolling horse country, with white-fenced farms and historic stone walls lining the roadway. Watch for great blue herons fishing along the riverbanks and red-tailed hawks circling above the bluffs. Pull over at designated overlooks to take in sweeping views of the Kentucky River gorge, where cliffs reach heights of nearly 300 feet.

Along the way, you’ll find small-town charm, local wineries, and trailheads leading down to the river’s edge. The road itself is unhurried — narrow and winding in places, rewarding drivers who slow down and soak in the scenery.

Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the drive, longer if you plan to stop and explore. Fall delivers the most spectacular views, with peak foliage typically arriving in mid-October, but a spring drive through blooming dogwoods and redbuds is equally memorable.
