Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway
South Carolina
112.0 miles
Winding 112 miles along the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC-11) offers one of the most spectacular drives in the American South. This National Scenic Byway traces the ancient path once traveled by Cherokee hunters, connecting I-85 near Fair Play to Gaffney through some of South Carolina’s most breathtaking terrain.
The route delivers a constantly changing panorama of mountain vistas, cascading waterfalls, and rolling pastoral landscapes. Travelers pass through the heart of South Carolina’s peach country, alongside pristine lakes, and beneath canopies of hardwood forests. Key stops include Table Rock State Park with its iconic granite dome, the thundering waters of Issaqueena Falls, and charming small towns like Walhalla and Travelers Rest offering local dining and antique shops.
The highway provides access to numerous state parks, hiking trails, and the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River. Roadside produce stands overflow with fresh peaches, apples, and boiled peanuts in season.
Best time to visit: Fall foliage season (mid-October through early November) transforms the corridor into a spectacular display of color, though spring wildflowers and summer greenery offer their own rewards.
Allow: A full day to properly explore the stops along this scenic treasure.
