Caesars Head State Park
South Carolina (Greenville County)
Caesars Head State Park rises dramatically from the Blue Ridge Escarpment in Greenville County, South Carolina, where the mountains drop sharply into the piedmont below. Spanning 7,467 acres, this park is defined by its namesake granite outcrop — a massive rock face that towers at 3,208 feet and offers one of the most commanding overlooks in the Southeast.
The park sits within the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, connected to Jones Gap State Park by a network of rugged trails. Hikers come for Raven Cliff Falls, a 420-foot cascade visible from a suspension bridge along a moderate 4-mile round-trip trail. The Jones Gap Trail descends through old-growth forest along the Middle Saluda River, rewarding stronger hikers with swimming holes and backcountry solitude. In total, over 60 miles of trails thread through the wilderness area.
Each autumn, Caesars Head becomes one of the premier hawk-watching sites on the East Coast. Broad-winged hawks migrate through by the thousands in September, and the park hosts an annual Hawk Watch program with naturalists on hand to help visitors spot kettles spiraling overhead.
Spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor from late March through May, making it an excellent shoulder-season visit. Summer brings relief from lowcountry heat, with temperatures running 10–15 degrees cooler than Columbia or Charleston.
Stop at the visitor center near the summit for trail maps and current conditions. The park is a day-use destination — for overnight stays, nearby Jones Gap offers backcountry campsites accessible only by trail.
