Croft State Park
South Carolina (Spartanburg County)
Spread across 7,054 acres in Spartanburg County, Croft State Park is one of South Carolina’s most expansive state parks — and one of its best-kept secrets. Built on the grounds of a former World War II Army training camp, the park carries traces of its military past alongside miles of forested trails, open meadows, and quiet lakes that make it a favorite among hikers, mountain bikers, and especially equestrians.
Horseback riding is the star here. With over 20 miles of dedicated equestrian trails winding through rolling Piedmont terrain, Croft draws riders from across the Southeast. A horse show ring and trailer-accessible parking make it easy to bring your own mount. For those on foot, the park’s hiking and biking trails range from easy lakeside loops to longer routes through hardwood forests and along creek beds.
Two lakes — Lake Craig and Lake Johnson — offer solid fishing for bass, bream, and catfish, plus a seasonal swimming area at Lake Craig that’s a local go-to on summer afternoons. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks on the calm water.
Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer brings heat and humidity but also swimming season. Winter is quiet and ideal for trail riding.
Whether you’re saddling up for a day on the trails, casting a line at dawn, or just looking for a big stretch of uncrowded Carolina woods, Croft State Park delivers without the fanfare.
