Woods Bay State Park preserves one of the last remaining large Carolina bays in the state — a shallow, elliptical depression formed thousands of years ago by forces geologists still debate. Spanning 1,590 acres across Clarendon, Florence, and Sumter counties, this park offers something genuinely different from the typical state park experience. Instead of manicured trails and crowded picnic areas, you’ll find a quiet, otherworldly landscape of blackwater swamp, bog forest, and mill pond.

The park’s centerpiece is the Carolina bay itself, best explored by canoe or kayak along the still, tea-colored waters. Rentals are available on-site, and paddling through the bald cypress and tupelo gum trees draped in Spanish moss feels like slipping back a few centuries. A 1,000-foot boardwalk extends into the bay for those who prefer to stay dry, offering close-up views of the wetland ecosystem and its residents — great blue herons, turtles, and the occasional alligator.

Hiking the nature trail loop gives a solid introduction to the bay’s distinct plant communities, from longleaf pine uplands to dense swamp forest. Birding is excellent, particularly during spring and fall migrations. Fishing is permitted in the mill pond.

Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable conditions for exploring. Summer brings heat and mosquitoes in abundance — pack repellent if you visit between June and September. Winter offers bare canopy views and solitude.
