Katy Trail State Park
Missouri (Boone, Callaway, Cooper, Henry, Howard, Montgomery, Pettis, St. Charles, Warren County)
Katy Trail State Park stretches 240 miles across Missouri’s heartland, making it the longest rail-trail in the United States. Built along the former Missouri-Kansas–Texas Railroad corridor, the crushed-limestone path follows the Missouri River valley through ten counties, passing towering bluffs, dense bottomland forests, and charming small towns that feel untouched by time.
The trail runs from Clinton in the west to Machens near St. Charles in the east, threading through some of Missouri’s most scenic river country. Between Boonville and Defiance, the path hugs the Missouri River so closely you can watch herons fishing from the bank. The Lewis and Clark segment between St. Charles and Boonville traces the same landscape the explorers documented in 1804.
Cycling is the main draw — the flat, gentle grade makes it accessible to riders of all levels. Hikers and runners share the path, and several trailheads offer equestrian access on designated sections. Small-town stops like Rocheport, Augusta, and Hermann provide wineries, B&038;Bs, and local restaurants that make multi-day trips rewarding.
Primitive camping is available at several designated spots along the trail, and nearby state parks like Arrow Rock offer developed campgrounds for those wanting more amenities.
Spring and fall are ideal — wildflowers line the trail in April and May, while October brings spectacular foliage along the river bluffs. Summer rides work best in early morning before Missouri’s humidity builds.
Expect a quiet, immersive experience where the miles pass easily and every trailside town invites you to linger.
