Stretching across nearly 24,400 acres where the Illinois and Mississippi rivers converge, Mississippi River State Fish and Wildlife Area is one of Illinois’ largest public lands — a sprawling mosaic of bottomland forests, backwater lakes, and river bluffs that feels worlds away from anywhere.

Based near Grafton in Jersey and Calhoun counties, this wildlife area sits at the heart of the Great River Road corridor, where the landscape shifts dramatically with the seasons. Fall transforms the bluffs into corridors of gold and crimson, drawing hunters pursuing white-tailed deer and wild turkey across some of the most productive public hunting ground in the state.

Fishing is exceptional here — the backwater sloughs and oxbow lakes teem with largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish, while the main river channels offer world-class flathead catfish opportunities. Bring a boat if you can; the maze of connected waterways rewards exploration.

Birders will find this area irresistible year-round, with bald eagles congregating along the river bluffs in winter and neotropical migrants passing through in waves each May. Hiking trails wind through bottomland timber, offering quiet stretches where you’re more likely to encounter a great blue heron than another person.
