Robertsville State Park
Missouri (Franklin County)
Nestled along the banks of the Meramec River in Franklin County, Missouri, Robertsville State Park offers 1,224 acres of rolling Ozark foothills just an hour west of St. Louis. The park sits at the edge of where Missouri’s central plains give way to wooded river bluffs, creating a landscape that shifts from open meadows to dense hardwood forests within a single hike.
The Meramec River is the main draw here. Its clear, spring-fed waters are ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing — smallmouth bass and goggle-eye are popular catches. A concrete boat ramp provides easy river access. On land, several miles of trails wind through oak-hickory woodlands and along limestone bluffs, with terrain gentle enough for families but scenic enough to hold your attention. Wildflower displays in spring are particularly striking along the river corridor.
Picnic areas with shelters are scattered throughout the park, and open fields make it a solid spot for group gatherings. Birders will find the mix of river, forest, and grassland habitats productive — especially during spring and fall migration when warblers move through the canopy.
The best time to visit is late April through October, when river levels are favorable and the forest is at its fullest. Spring brings wildflowers and dogwood blooms; fall delivers some of the best leaf color in the region along the Meramec valley.
Robertsville works well as a day trip from St. Louis or as a base for exploring the broader Meramec River corridor.
