Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Route
Illinois
33.0 miles
Where the Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri rivers converge, this 33-mile National Scenic Byway delivers one of the Midwest’s most dramatic driving experiences. Winding along towering limestone bluffs from Kampsville to Alton, the route traces ancient waterways that have shaped both landscape and history.
The journey begins near Kampsville at the Illinois River, where the road hugs the bluffline through Pere Marquette State Park—home to the magnificent stone lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and some of Illinois’ finest hiking trails. Watch for bald eagles soaring above the river, especially during winter months when hundreds gather near the open waters.
Continuing south, you’ll pass through the charming river town of Grafton, where limestone cliffs rise 300 feet overhead and riverside restaurants serve fresh catfish with views of passing barges. The route culminates near Alton, where the legendary Piasa Bird painting adorns the bluffs and the rivers finally meet in a spectacular confluence.
Best time to visit: Fall foliage transforms the bluffs into a tapestry of gold and crimson, while winter brings eagle-watching season. Spring wildflowers carpet the hillsides.
Allow: 2-3 hours minimum, though a full day lets you explore the parks, antique shops, and waterfront dining that make this route unforgettable.
