Castlewood State Park
Missouri (St. Louis County)
Perched along the bluffs of the Meramec River in St. Louis County, Castlewood State Park offers 1,818 acres of rugged Ozark-edge terrain just 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis. The park is a favorite among locals for its dramatic river bluffs, dense hardwood forests, and a trail system that punches well above its weight for a suburban park.
The River Scene Trail delivers sweeping views of the Meramec from limestone bluffs rising over 100 feet above the water, while the Grottos Trail winds past shallow caves and mossy rock shelters carved into the hillside. Hikers and trail runners have roughly 15 miles of paths to explore, ranging from easy riverside walks to steep bluff-top scrambles. Mountain biking is permitted on designated trails, and the river below draws kayakers, canoeists, and anglers targeting smallmouth bass and catfish.
Rock climbing is another draw — the park’s limestone bluffs offer routes that attract climbers from across the region. In warmer months, the river’s gravel bars make excellent spots for wading and picnicking.
Castlewood does not offer camping facilities, so plan your visit as a day trip. The park is open year-round, but fall is arguably the best time to go: the bluff-top views explode with color, temperatures cool into comfortable hiking range, and summer crowds thin out considerably.
Whether you’re looking for a quick after-work trail run or a full day of river exploration, Castlewood delivers an experience that feels far wilder than its zip code suggests.
