Gooseberry Falls State Park
Minnesota (Lake County)
Gooseberry Falls State Park sits along Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior in Lake County, spanning 1,741 acres of rugged, waterfall-carved landscape. It’s one of the most visited state parks in Minnesota, and for good reason — the Gooseberry River drops through five distinct waterfalls before emptying into Lake Superior, creating some of the most photographed scenery in the Upper Midwest.
The Upper and Lower Falls are accessible within minutes of the visitor center, making this a rare park where the headline attraction requires almost no hiking. But venture further and you’ll find 20 miles of trails winding through birch and spruce forest along the river gorge and Lake Superior shoreline. In winter, those same trails open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and the frozen falls become a dramatic ice sculpture.
The park’s campground offers 70 sites — a mix of drive-in and walk-in options — nestled in the woods above the lake. Sites book fast during peak season, so reserve well in advance if you’re planning a summer or fall visit.
Fall is arguably the best time to come. The North Shore’s autumn color peaks in late September, and heavier rainfall swells the falls into a thundering spectacle. Summer brings warmer temperatures and longer days for exploring the rocky Lake Superior beach. Spring snowmelt turns the river into a torrent — dramatic to watch, if cold to stand near.
Bring layers regardless of season. Lake Superior makes its own weather, and temperatures at the shore can drop 15 degrees without warning.
