Flood Bay State Wayside
Tucked along Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior in Lake County, Flood Bay State Wayside offers one of the most accessible and rewarding lakefront stops on Highway 61. Established in 1965, this compact wayside rest gives travelers an intimate encounter with Superior’s rugged cobblestone beaches without the crowds of larger state parks nearby.
What makes Flood Bay special is its shoreline. A wide, curving beach of smooth basalt and rhyolite stones stretches along the bay, perfect for rock hunting, skipping stones, or simply sitting and watching the lake shift moods. The gentle slope of the beach makes it particularly appealing for families with young children who want to wade and explore the water’s edge.
Visitors can picnic at tables overlooking the lake, take a short walk along the shore, and photograph the dramatic wave action that gives the bay its name — during storms and high water, waves flood across the low-lying beach with real force. Birdwatchers will find the bay productive during spring and fall migrations, when gulls, mergansers, and occasional shorebirds work the waterline.
There’s no camping at Flood Bay itself, but nearby Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse state parks offer full campground facilities within a short drive.
The best time to visit is late September through mid-October, when the North Shore’s famous fall color peaks on the surrounding hillsides and the lake takes on its deep autumn blue. Summer weekdays offer the most solitude. No entry fee is required.
