Duluth South BreakwaterInner Light
Lake Superior · Minnesota
Standing guard over Duluth’s historic harbor since 1889, the South Breakwater Inner Light is one of Minnesota’s most photographed sentinels on Lake Superior. This active navigational aid marks the inner entrance to the Duluth Ship Canal, guiding massive ore freighters and ocean-going vessels through the narrow passage.
Though not open to public climbing, the lighthouse is easily viewed from the Lakewalk and Canal Park, where visitors gather to watch ships pass beneath the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge just steps away. Golden hour and winter ice formations offer the most dramatic photography conditions.
Nearby, explore Canal Park’s shops and restaurants, the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, and Enger Tower for panoramic harbor views.
