Tippy Dam State Recreation Area
Michigan (Manistee County)
Tippy Dam State Recreation Area sits along the Manistee River in Manistee County, Michigan, offering 117 acres of rugged riverside terrain that draws anglers from across the Midwest. Built around the Tippy Dam hydroelectric facility, this recreation area is best known for its exceptional salmon and steelhead fishing — particularly during the fall Chinook salmon run, when the dam creates a natural stopping point that concentrates fish below the spillway.
The river below the dam runs cold and fast year-round, making it prime habitat for trout and salmon species. Spring brings steelhead runs, summer offers smallmouth bass and walleye, and fall delivers the legendary salmon migration that packs the riverbanks with wader-clad fishermen. Even if you don’t fish, watching dozens of massive salmon leap against the current is a spectacle worth the drive.
Beyond fishing, the area provides hiking trails through mixed hardwood and pine forest, with scenic overlooks of the dam and river valley. Birdwatchers will find bald eagles and ospreys hunting the fish-rich waters, especially during spawning season. The Manistee River Trail passes nearby for longer backcountry excursions.
The recreation area does not offer developed campgrounds on-site, but several state forest campgrounds and private options sit within a short drive along the Manistee River corridor.
Visit in late September through mid-October for peak salmon activity and vivid fall color. Spring steelhead season (March–April) is equally rewarding with fewer crowds. Expect unpaved roads and basic facilities — this is a place built for the river, not the resort.
