Mitchell State Park sits at the narrow strip of land between Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell in Wexford County, Michigan — a rare dual-lake setting that gives visitors waterfront access in two directions. The park’s 660 acres stretch across this isthmus, making it one of the few state parks in Michigan where you can watch the sunrise over one lake and the sunset over another.
The two lakes define the experience here. Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell are connected by a canal that runs through the park, creating prime spots for fishing walleye, pike, and panfish year-round. In winter, the lakes draw ice anglers from across the state. Summer brings kayakers, canoeists, and swimmers to both shorelines, with a designated beach on Lake Cadillac that stays manageable even on busy weekends.
A paved trail connects the park to the city of Cadillac, making it easy to bike into town for supplies or dinner. The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, located within the park, houses wildlife exhibits and educational programs worth a stop — especially for families.
The campground offers sites near both lakes, though spots closest to the water book fast during July and August. If you’re flexible on dates, late September delivers quieter campsites, fall color reflecting off both lakes, and some of the best fishing of the year.
Mitchell State Park works best as a base camp for exploring Wexford County’s trails and waterways, with the rare bonus of never being far from shore.
