Located on Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, Newport State Park earned its International Dark Sky Park designation in 2017, becoming Wisconsin’s first certified dark sky park. This 2,373-acre wilderness offers exceptional stargazing conditions thanks to its remote location surrounded by Lake Michigan waters on three sides, minimizing light pollution from nearby communities.

Under optimal conditions, observers can view the Milky Way in stunning detail, spot the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye, and observe faint nebulae and star clusters. The Bortle scale readings regularly reach Class 2-3, revealing celestial objects invisible from urban areas.

Best Viewing: Late summer through fall offers ideal conditions, with August providing prime Milky Way positioning and Perseid meteor shower activity. Plan observations between 10 PM and 3 AM when skies reach maximum darkness.

Equipment: Bring binoculars for wide-field views; telescopes benefit from the exceptional transparency. Red flashlights preserve night vision.

Facilities: The park features designated astronomy areas, backcountry campsites, and hosts periodic star parties with local astronomy clubs. Arrive early to secure parking, as the park closes at 11 PM to vehicles.
