Straits State Park sits on the Lake Huron shoreline in St. Ignace, offering what may be the most dramatic view of the Mackinac Bridge in all of Michigan. From the park’s bluffs and beach, the five-mile suspension bridge stretches across the straits in full panoramic glory — especially stunning at night when it’s lit up against the dark water.

Spread across 181 acres in Mackinac County, the park is split into two units. The main campground area hugs the waterfront with sites tucked among hardwoods, while the Father Marquette unit sits on a hill above town, home to a memorial and museum honoring the French missionary who founded St. Ignace in 1671. The beach is rocky but swimmable, and the water stays cold well into summer — this is where Lake Huron meets Lake Michigan, after all. Hiking trails are modest but rewarding, and the park makes an ideal base camp for day trips to Mackinac Island (the ferry dock is minutes away), the Upper Peninsula’s eastern attractions, or the many roadside stops along US-2.

Peak season runs late June through August, when campground reservations fill fast. September brings smaller crowds, fall color, and cool nights perfect for campfires with that bridge view.
