Silver Lake State Park
Michigan (Oceana County)
Silver Lake State Park stretches across nearly 3,000 acres along Michigan’s western shoreline in Oceana County, where towering sand dunes meet the freshwater coast of Lake Michigan. This is one of the few places in the state where visitors can ride off-road vehicles directly on open sand dunes — a rare thrill that draws families and adventure seekers from across the Midwest.
The park’s centerpiece is the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, a vast expanse of wind-sculpted dunes rising above the lake. A designated ORV area covers roughly 450 acres, open to licensed off-road vehicles from April through October. For those who prefer quieter exploration, a pedestrian dune area offers miles of unmarked trails where hikers can climb barefoot to panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding dune ecosystem.
Silver Lake itself provides calm, warm water ideal for swimming, kayaking, and fishing for bass and panfish. A public boat launch gives easy access, and the sheltered shoreline is friendlier for young swimmers than the open lake.
The park’s campground offers over 200 modern sites with electric hookups, restrooms, and hot showers — book early for summer weekends, as spots fill fast. Several sites sit within walking distance of the beach.
Peak season runs from late June through August, when dune rides and lake swimming are at their best. September brings smaller crowds and cooler temperatures perfect for hiking. Spring visitors will find wildflowers reclaiming the dune edges as the landscape wakes up.
